Bundle Dyeing Workshops

The ancient art of natural bundle dyeing was explored in a class led by Samhita Kamisetty as the instructor. Bundle dyeing, a technique in which flowers, herbs, and seeds were used to create unique prints and patterns on fabric or paper, was the focus of the class. The fabric was rolled into a bundle and then steamed to release the plant dye.

In the engaging workshop, participants delved into the world of working with natural dyes and learned the fascinating process of bundle dyeing.

Throughout the session, participants were introduced to the following:

  • Natural dye plants and mordants.

  • Various natural dyestuffs such as onion skins, turmeric, fresh and dried flowers, and more.

  • Step-by-step bundle dyeing on cotton, including fabric preparation, dyestuff placement, fabric bundling, and steaming on a stovetop.

Under Samhita Kamisetty's guidance, each participant created a uniquely dyed piece. Moreover, they gained the expertise to design and produce more dyed creations independently.

The class fee included comprehensive instruction and all necessary supplies and materials, ranging from dyestuffs to fabrics. Light refreshments were served, and a warm cup of chai from Kolkata Chai (not sponsored, we just loved them!) was provided. Whether participants were complete beginners or had no prior experience, the workshop warmly welcomed all skill levels. Participants were encouraged to bring their curiosity and a notebook to take notes or draw if they wished.
